Make an electromagnet
You will need:
A rectangular 4.5 volt battery, or a battery holder containing two or three 1.5 volt batteries. 80cm of plastic coated wire. A large steel nail. Some Paperclips.
What to do:
Wind the wire around the nail at least 20 times and leave a short length of wire free at each end.
Attach one end of the wire to one of the terminals on the battery.
Connect the other end of the wire to the other terminal on the battery.
Now put the nail near the paperclips and see what happens!
